Did you know that dogs’ noses are at least 100,000 times more sensitive than ours? 😮 It’s no wonder that our canine pals are sniffing-obsessed! It’s just one of the reasons why Scent Detection is a wonderful activity for your dog. Scent Detection is a dog sport open to dogs of all breeds, sizes, and ages! This sport encourages dogs to exercise their natural instinct to sniff out a scent and communicate with their handler once they have located the scent in question. Scent detection can be done for fun or in a trial environment. We offer three courses of Scent Detection at @luvak9inc for students who have completed Intermediate Obedience with us. We have two Level I Scent Detection courses kicking off on the following dates: 🐾 Sundays at 4:00pm starting May 5 (EAST CAMPUS) 🐾 Wednesdays at 3:00pm starting May 15 (WEST CAMPUS). Blue, Teddy, Bowie, and Teddy would like to tell you all that they had all the fun at Puppy Practice and Play last week! 😃⁠ ⁠ What is Puppy Practice and Play, you ask? ⁠ ⁠ It's a session specifically designed for pups currently enrolled in Puppy Kindergarten to gain additional socialization in a safe and controlled environment. ⁠ ⁠ These sessions are closely moderated by #luvak9 staff to ensure appropriate play groups, fair play, and of course, safety. Puppies will have off-leash play time to engage with other pups (and people!) and an opportunity to reinforce learning with exercises from Puppy Kindergarten 📚. ⁠ Puppy Practice and Play runs every Saturday from 9:00am - 10:00am at EAST campus. If you’re struggling with loose-leash walking, you’re not alone! 🐶 This is a skill that takes time and lots of practice 📚! Here are three tips to try out: 1. Keep training sessions short and sweet. Work on maintaining your dog’s interest and engagement with you for 5-10 minutes! Gradually increase this time as your dog learns what you’re asking for. ⏱️ 2. Set your dog up for success. Choose a low-distraction environment to start out in and ensure that you head into the training session with a sense of fun and patience. 🧘 3. Reward the behaviour you want with high value treats. Affectionately dubbed “Rally-O”, this activity is a great way to build your relationship with your dog while honing your skills in obedience. In Rally-O, dogs and handlers move through a numbered course that involves a variety of obedience exercises. Many of our students participate in Rally-O for fun and competition! Hello friends of Luv-A-K9! We are delighted to share that we are supporting a local non-profit organization, Feed the People, in fundraising staple food ingredients or cash donations to support houseless folks at the Integrated Care Hub in Kingston, Ontario for the whole month of March. ⁠ ⁠ Feed the People is entirely reliant on the generosity of our community. Be it staple food ingredients or cash donations, 100% of the proceeds go towards making lunch meals for the houseless folks at the Integrated Care HUB, also known as "The Encampment." This organization produces 80-100 servings of food 5-7 days a week and is the primary lunch provider for the folks staying on site.⁠ ⁠ To support this initiative, we are collecting donations at our East and West Campus locations. “What’s a Canine Good Neighbour test?” We are SO glad you asked! 🐾 The Canine Good Neighbour Program is a 12-step non-competitive test 🐾 Encourages dogs and handlers to focus on good manners and neighbourly behaviour in public, at home, and around other dogs 🐾 The test assesses the handler and dog's relationship, ability to complete basic exercises, and demonstrate good manners in everyday scenarios. 📣 Registration is open for indoor agility practice! Our outdoor agility field is coming to a close in the next few weeks, but that doesn’t mean that agility practice has to end! We are offering a number of time slots available for agility practice through the fall 🍂and winter ❄️ months. Indoor practices are 12 weeks long, run for an hour and a half each week and cost $260 (taxes included). We can’t wait to see you at our pop up training day at @renspets Kingston TODAY from 10-3! Drop by to learn about the “CLICK & TREAT” command, which has so many applications in training - trick and scent detection being just a couple! “Loading” a clicker is the first step to introducing this tool to your dog. We need to program our dog’s brains to know that a click = a treat! Start loading your clicker by clicking once and then praising your dog excitedly with verbal and physical praise, as well as food. Once your dog knows that a click means something great, we can start using the clicker to mark offered behaviours and pair them with commands! Come practice your new skill with us!

Bob is bringing you some very exciting news this morning that there is something NEW at Luv-A-K9! 😎 Looking for additional practice time in a safe space? Missed a week of class and want to make it up? Join us for our new trainer supported, Self-Guided Practice! 📚 This hour and a half practice is open to anyone actively in class, or who has completed a Luv-A-K9 course within the past six months. Any courses requiring additional equipment (agility, rally obedience, etc.) are not supported. You’ll be responsible for determining what you’d like to work on, and our trainers will be present to support you with your questions and assist you in completing exercises. The first hour will be open floor for on-leash exercises, and the last half hour is dedicated to off-leash recalls and group heeling. Self-Guided Practice is being hosted weekly at our East Campus on Thursdays from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM (join in whenever you’d like!) for $20.00 + HST. All levels of classes are welcome to join and can pop-in at any point during the practice. Registration is not required, and payment can be made on-site using any major credit card, debit or cash. One of the most common questions we get asked is: "How do I get my dog to stop pulling on the leash?!"⁠ ⁠ The answer is that it's not as simple as waving a magic wand but it CAN get better by dedicating time and patience to working on leash manners with your dog. ⁠ ⁠ If you're struggling with this, here are 4 questions to ask before you start your training sessions;⁠ ⁠ 1️⃣ Are you consistent with your expectations with your dog on your walk? ⁠Or do they change depending on the time of day, your mood, or the purpose of the walk? Is that effectively communicated to your dog? ⁠ ⁠ 🐕 If the answer is no, start here! Create a routine and make sure that you are consistent with the rules of the walk. ⁠ ⁠ 2️⃣ Have you taken the time to communicate to your dog what you want from them?⁠ ⁠ 🐕 Clear communication and reward (we'll touch on this in the next question) is an important part of training! In order to change a behaviour (pulling) we need to provide our dog with an alternative (heeling) and prove to them this alternative is better. ⁠ ⁠ 3️⃣ Are you rewarding the dog when they achieve what you are asking?⁠ ⁠ 🐕 Make sure to celebrate the wins - big and small! ⁠If your dog achieves what you're asking (ie: heeling), reward them to reinforce that they've made the behaviour choice you were wanting. ⁠ ⁠ 4️⃣ Are the tools you're using effective?⁠ ⁠ 🐕 Always consider the environment you're walking in and prepare accordingly! If you're training in an environment with lots of distractions, the tools you're using (treats), might need to be extra special to be effective. ⁠ ⁠ 🐾 Remember that leash walking is a skill that needs to be practiced!
