This semester our sweet team of Therapy Dogs provided comfort to over a thousand members of the Queen’s University community. We are so proud of our volunteer teams for sharing their dogs with students and faculty to bring some joy to their days. We are looking forward to getting back to it in January! 🐾

Indoor Agility Practices at Luv-A-K9 are the best way to continue to build your skills, perfect your handling and add new challenges in agility. Sessions run year-round and are a great opportunity to provide your agility pup with adequate exercise and mental stimulation despite crummy winter weather 🙌🏻 We have spaces in upcoming practices beginning at our West Campus facility (1132 Clyde Court): •Sunday at 10:00 AM, beginning 2024-November-24 (1 space available!) •Wednesday at 12:00 PM, beginning 2025-January-08 (3 spaces available!) •Wednesday at 7:30 PM, beginning 2025-February-19 Please let us know if you’d like to join us! Agility Practices are twelve week sessions, for an hour and a half each week and the total cost is $260.00 including tax. The Indoor Agility Practices will be filled on a first come first serve basis, and we are currently limited to six students per session. Calvin and Bob have exciting news to share! 🎅🏻✨ We had such a blast at the Kingston Nighttime Santa Claus parade last year that we just HAD to do it again❄️ We would like to invite our students to join us for the approximately 3.5 KM walk down Princess Street from Novelis to Springer Market Square spreading festive, furry cheer with their dogs on Saturday, November 23rd. The parade begins at 5:00 PM sharp, and culminates with a tree lighting ceremony in market square at 7:00 PM.🎄 Please note that there is some additional standing time as we are required to gather in advance of this time by the parade committee. The environment will be loud and busy; there will be music, sirens, car horns, bells, people in costumes, dancers, screaming children, flashing lights, and more! The expectations for your dog are as follows: ✨they walk nicely on a Luv-A-K9 approved collar (flat collar, slip lead, slip training collar, martingale collar, or prong collar); no haltis or harnesses please! ✨they remain calm and responsive to you in busy environments ✨they are not reactive or space invasive towards the other dogs and people ✨they are physically capable of and comfortable walking this distance and being in this type of environment ✨festive outfits for both yourself and your pup are strongly encouraged (we will have extra to share)! As noted above, this event can be overwhelming for many dogs, and we encourage you to consider if this would be a truly enjoyable experience for your dog. It is not suitable for shy, nervous, or sound sensitive dogs. (Don’t worry though! We have other holiday fun planned for all Luv-A-K9 dogs!) She headed out for a lovely, laid back autumn walk today with our easy going pal, Stella 🍂 from pick up to drop off, and every moment in between, Lauryn is known for her organization and giving lots of love to the dogs she is walking! A lovely group of dogs during a Luv-A-K9 Therapy Dog visit last week 💙. Sam, Calvin, Geordie, Myah and Lonny shared affection with hundreds of students and staff at Queen’s University. Our team visits Stirling Hall and Chernoff Hall bi-weekly throughout the school year to bring comfort and smiles to everyone who stops by to visit!

The Public Access course is geared toward people that have an interest in working towards therapy dog work, have a service dog in training, or just want to work further on having a dog who is reliable in public situations, including stores. This course involves 3 weeks of in-class lessons and 3 weeks out in public in dog-friendly stores. 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲. Some of the things you will learn in this course include how to navigate tight spaces, get your dog to ignore people, teach your dog to help pick things up if you drop them, advance your stays and waits, open access doors, learn a formal “go visit” command, and more! It’s another scorcher out there today! 🥵🔥 the safety of your dogs and our staff is always our #1 priority! We take many precautions to ensure the safety of your pets on these hot summer days. Our team is knowledgeable on prevention and indications of overheating in dogs, and will make the educated decision to cut walks shorter if necessary! Behind this, we want to ensure your pup is having an enjoyable outing, and we will allow for extra shade breaks and dips in the water to cool off. As always, we offer plenty of fresh water to furry friends 🐾

As the team moves through the course they preform up to 20 signs per course, depending on the class level, that include various obedience skills including turns, position changes, and more! Oh Stash, you are such a cutie 🥰. This sweet little Chinese Crested Dog enjoyed a groom with Savannah this afternoon ahead of the Kingston & District Kennel Club show this weekend at the Odessa fairgrounds. Interested in learning more about dogs? A show is a great place to do it! 🐩 In conformation showing, the judge compares dogs to a written standard for each breed that describes the structure, temperament, and appearance of a dog built to perform well at the job it was bred to do. Preservation breeders of purebred dogs strive to improve their breed with every litter, contributing to the breeds overall health and well-being. Comparison allows breeders to maintain quality, and therefore a dog show allows breeders to exhibit their dogs while observing other dogs within the breed as well. Dog shows are a great way to learn more about all breeds (and why they look and act the way they do!), but particularly rare breeds that you may not meet in your day-to-day life, like the Chinese Crested. Come watch Stash, and hundreds of other dogs, represent their breed this weekend. 🤓

The exciting news just keeps coming! We are thrilled to share that we will be hosting Stephanie Perrier for a Scent Detection skill building workshop this summer. Stephanie is the head trainer of Competitive K9's in Ottawa, Ontario. She is an incredibly knowledgeable teacher and decorated competitor in Sporting Scent Detection. Stephanie’s accomplishments in scent detection include 5 SD-S, 4 SD-A, 2 SD-Es, 2 SD-CH, 2 SD-MACH (the first in Canada to earn that title) and a SD-EL. Among these titles she has earned multiple specials, perfect scores, and judge’s choice awards. This workshop is geared towards dog and handler teams that are working on odour in all three elements (Containers, Interior, and Exterior) at the Advanced level and beyond, and are preparing to or are already actively trialing in Sporting Scent Detection. We will work on search patterns, handling, distractions, multiple hides, and more! Dog training isn’t JUST about obedience! It’s also about developing a bond with your dog and growing and learning as a team 💙. There’s so many ways to engage with your dog and have fun doing it. It makes us truly proud to see handlers and dogs grow over months (and years!). What’s something that you enjoy doing with your dog?

Did you know that dogs’ noses are at least 100,000 times more sensitive than ours? 😮 It’s no wonder that our canine pals are sniffing-obsessed! It’s just one of the reasons why Scent Detection is a wonderful activity for your dog. Scent Detection is a dog sport open to dogs of all breeds, sizes, and ages! This sport encourages dogs to exercise their natural instinct to sniff out a scent and communicate with their handler once they have located the scent in question. Scent detection can be done for fun or in a trial environment. We offer three courses of Scent Detection at @luvak9inc for students who have completed Intermediate Obedience with us. If you’re struggling with loose-leash walking, you’re not alone! 🐶 This is a skill that takes time and lots of practice 📚! Here are three tips to try out: 1. Keep training sessions short and sweet. Work on maintaining your dog’s interest and engagement with you for 5-10 minutes! Gradually increase this time as your dog learns what you’re asking for. ⏱️ 2. Set your dog up for success. Choose a low-distraction environment to start out in and ensure that you head into the training session with a sense of fun and patience. 🧘 3. Reward the behaviour you want with high value treats. 📣 Luv-A-K9 student, Lenny, is bringing you a very important announcement that Luv-A-K9 and Luv-A-K9 Exclusive Services will be closed tomorrow, April 8th. The City of Kingston is expecting upwards of 500,000 + people to descend on the city tomorrow to view the solar eclipse. This will present unprecedented logistical challenges regarding travel within the city limits. As such, we will be following suit with other local businesses and closing for the day. If you are scheduled to start a class tomorrow, your new start date will be at the same scheduled time, but commencing on Monday, April 15th, 2024. If your class is already in session (at either East Campus or West Campus), your class will simply pause for one week and resume at your same time on Monday, April 15th, 2024. Be it staple food ingredients or cash donations, 100% of the proceeds go towards making lunch meals for the houseless folks at the Integrated Care HUB, also known as "The Encampment." This organization produces 80-100 servings of food 5-7 days a week and is the primary lunch provider for the folks staying on site.⁠ ⁠ To support this initiative, we are collecting donations at our East and West Campus locations. “What’s a Canine Good Neighbour test?” We are SO glad you asked! 🐾 The Canine Good Neighbour Program is a 12-step non-competitive test 🐾 Encourages dogs and handlers to focus on good manners and neighbourly behaviour in public, at home, and around other dogs 🐾 The test assesses the handler and dog's relationship, ability to complete basic exercises, and demonstrate good manners in everyday scenarios.
